Port of Spain- The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services, through the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Unit, hosted the inaugural World NGO Day Fair under the theme “Better, Together”. The event brought together representatives of the local NGO community, international development partners, as well as stakeholders in an exhibition style display that highlighted the invaluable contributions of NGOs in driving national development and social progress.
Delivering the feature address, Senator the Honourable Donna Cox, Minister of Social Development and Family Services, emphasized the theme, “Empowering Grassroots Movements for a Sustainable Future.” She stressed the importance of community-led initiatives in supporting national development goals and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening the NGO sector. Minister Cox noted that over the past two years, more than three hundred and thirty 330 non-profit organisations have received $300 million in assistance, reflecting the Government’s ongoing support for their work.
“This fair, built on the theme ‘Better, Together,’ underscores the importance of collaboration and unity in achieving lasting change. NGOs play a pivotal role in ensuring that no one is left behind,” Minister Cox affirmed. She urged continued collaboration, stating, “The NGO sector is indispensable in achieving our national development goals. Let us work together to build a more just, equitable, and inclusive society.”
The Ministry, through Mr. Ryan Ramcharan, acting Permanent Secretary, reiterated its commitment to supporting NGOs through capacity-building initiatives, improved governance structures, and policy measures aimed at enhancing engagement and sustainability.
